Hi, I’m Jessika Brown.
I’m fueled by faith, fun workouts, and food that nourishes both body and soul.
Oh, and coffee. Lots of coffee.
I am a wife, mom, boss, cross-fitter, and self-proclaimed ornithologist (bird watcher). I believe that in order to give life our best, we have to have health woven into the basic fabric or our day. My mission here is to help you figure out how to make that happen for you.
As a Registered Dietitian (RD) I have been working in the health industry for the last 13 years. I run a medical nutrition therapy clinic and am an adjunct professor for nutrition at the University of New Mexico. I have certifications in Eating Disorders (CEDRD) and Sports Dietetics (CSSD). I have been trained as a Certified Wellness Coach and American Council on Exercise Group Fitness Instructor. All of which means I spend my days knee-deep in food talk – specifically sports nutrition and making peace with food.
Spending so much time in these two worlds of nutrition, mixed with a history of an eating disorder and the reality of being a mama to the stereotypical “mac and cheese and chicken nugget” kids – I have grown into a relationship with food and my body that is somewhere between intention and grace, discipline with sprinkles of flexibility.
But getting here has been a journey…
I wrestled with bulimia for years.
I’ve struggled with the “I am not enough” syndrome for a lifetime.
I have fallen prey to diet culture lies.
I have spent years with more energy directed toward beating my body up than living gratefully and comfortably in it.
These strongholds lost their grip on me when I returned to my faith after college. I will never forget walking in the mall past a jewelry store who’s slogan is “I am loved.” They have this on pins they often pass out. As the jeweler handed me one, I felt God hugging me and telling me, “I am loved.”
As I am. Flaws, imperfections, all of me.
It was then that I realized I didn’t need to be thinner, prettier, smarter, more or whatever else I felt I was lacking. I needed to love to accept that I am loved, and love others. This was the birth of my values: Family. Faith. Health. Meaningful work and inspiration.
Connecting to my values created a platform for a new relationship with health. I spent the next 5 years in school and the following 10 years training and learning as much about the field of health and nutrition. I have spent countless hours across the office from people just like you searching for that balance of health and nutrition and there is one thing I have come to conclude…
We are out there aspiring to have it all and move mountains, it is the daily discipline with sprinkles of flexibility that we build our strength and unleash our inner awesome. This strength can only be found when we equip our bodies with the fuel, rest, and connection it needs to sustain what we are asking from it. We ask so much of our body, we cannot afford to mistreat it.
On here you will find all I know about cultivating an energetic life thru faith, fuel, and fun. I have created (with the help of my dear friend and colleague Bryn Anthony) the empowered eating model. When we overlap our values, nutrition education, and internal awareness (body cues), this is where we become empowered eaters. I have put together so many resources for you in case you are wanting a little more support. This mission is a glimpse into my journey, and I hope it inspires yours.
Cheers and happy eating,
MS, RD, CEDRD-S, CSSD
